| Since the 1950s, artists have been using garbage (i.e. products standing at the end of the consumption chain) as esthetic instruments for their artwork. For cheap prices, the so-called “First World” imports precious natural resources from Africa, like cacao, diamonds, gold, crude oil... In return, countries of the so-called “Third World” are being flooded with products of mass-production and sometimes even with toxic waste. In a border-crossing project, these socio-economic processes are being explored by Eva Ursprung, Igor Petrovic, Manuel Lukas, Joachim Hainzl and Stefan Schmid. The T.O.Y.S. – Team will start its expedition in Graz in Mid-November. After selecting a representative cross section from the trashcans of Graz, the garbage will be loaded on to a Steyr 680 truck and sent on its mission. Starting at Casablanca, they will sell and barter the garbage at local markets. Rural as well as urban production-circles will be analyzed. Local garbage will be collected, documented and rapped up into a specially designed block of garbage-stocks. Urban slums will be visited and analyzed. These methods aim to explore the garbage of Marocco, Mauretania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo and Benin; garbage as a storyline and methodology in order to explore the global and socio-economic realities of different countries. In Togo we aim to film a telenovela with the local population. The set will be made of garbage. By means of a projector and radio transmitter we aim to build a moveable car-cinema. This will make it possible to show the finished telenovela at the local set. Lagos/Nigeria will the final stop of our artistic “treasure-hunt”. With its 14.000.000 inhabitants Lagos is one of the biggest cities in the world. It is one of Africa’s centers of commerce and as such an interface to the western industrial countries. A garbage dump hosting 2.000.000 people will be our research focus. We plan to contrast it to the garbage production of the rich neighborhoods, which have a working infrastructure. After the two-months trip we will work on an exhibition and a film portraying our activities.. |
